Spiked cocoa from Timberline Lodge along the Fruit Loop of Mount Hood

Nearing the conclusion of our trip to Portland, we couldn’t help but draw it out a little longer by taking the “fruit loop” around Mount Hood. As 84 got busier, we diverged onto 35 where produce stands sell fruit, nuts, vegetables, and other locally grown produce from the side of the road.

Along with the dramatic vistas, came a fun little side trip to Timberline Ski Resort. Perhaps you might recognize this place. The full parking lot and modern entry way might confuse the look and a hedge maze may help. This was the location for the outside shots of The Shining. We, however, could not determine where Johnny was. Rather than encountering hallways of blood and spooky twins, we enjoyed some fantastic clam chowder and spiked hot cocoa.

The Columbia river stretched out below us.

After weeks on the road in shiftless weather, it was wonderful to reach a point that was well and truly spring.

Mount Hood was shrouded in clouds. The weather was ominous. But that's ok: we had four-wheel drive.
