As Overland Expo East is fast approaching, my mind returns to all things overland, including this little gem of serendipity at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, California. Yes, there was an Overland Exhibit, and it was grand.⁠

I'm not saying we didn't catch anything. For all

I'm not saying we didn't catch anything. For all you know, we caught the largest fish in Tennessee. We might have had it reeled up to the dock. It may have hovered out of the water as I reached for my camera to take a picture. And, just as I brought the image into focus, the line may have snapped, and our mammoth fish slipped back into the water. ⁠

You should have seen how big this fish might have been. ⁠
⁠
So it's not as if I'm sour when I say that "it's not about what's on the end of the line." No, there's so much more than dinner to be found at the end of a pier. It's about the evening light dancing on the delicate ripples of the lake. It's about quiet companionship, standing shoulder to shoulder, attempting the pierce the water's surface and see the life swirling below the surface. It's about taking that time for ourselves to forget about the chaos of the day and just be.⁠

⁠Is there something that you regularly forget to pack when preparing for a road trip?⁠
⁠
It's amazing how we can travel around in our little home on wheels and still lose track of items. Maybe we leave a coat at a friend's house, some food in a bear locker, or my camera at a restaurant. (Yes, I left my camera—bag and all—at a little catfish shack in east Texas and didn't even realize it until hours later and over 100 miles away.)⁠
⁠
We've tried travel checklists and the old "remind me tomorrow" technique, and yet we find ourselves unintentionally downsizing.⁠
⁠
At least these days, we have a much more clearly delineated packing arrangement. Outdoor gear is packed in the truck bed. Indoor provisions are packed in the camper. It brings a little more order to our chaotic living space.⁠
