Oh, my friends. Pull up a stump and let me share my latest discovery: I've been upping my campfire game with this Blood Orange & Bourbon cocktail. It's the perfect close to an evening!
Different drinks transport us to other times and places. The French 75 is a bubbling glass of nostalgia. It is to be held in the hand of a silver screen starlet and toasted as fireworks explode in the background. While I forgo garnish on most of my cocktails, the French 75 almost begs for it. And, best of all: it is so easy to make. Heck, if you are willing to prepare it ahead of time and keep it chilled, you don't even need the ice cubes (which is a plus for nomads such as us where ice cubes are in rare supply.) Mix up your evening with this cocktail classic.
Back when I lived in NYC, one of my favorite haunts specialized in frozen Pomegranate Margaritas. They became a touchstone for a period in my early 20s that I haven't had the opportunity to revisit in years. But this last week I bought a cup of pomegranate seeds to eat and discovered that they fermented faster than I could consume them. So, here I am, unsure what to do with a bunch of partially fermented pomegranate seeds when it occurs to me: these would be great in a cocktail!
Sangria relies on some base of citrus and some other fruit mixed with a dry red wine and some liquor like brandy. This makes for a relatively simple formula that is easy to tweak for any occasion. Traditionally, the fruit is apple and orange, which I brought. I also brought raspberries, strawberries, and blackberries.
It's fall in the South, but the weather hasn't quite gotten the memo. I had been looking forward to our latest camping trip for a while, but found that the heat really deprived me of much motivation to do much more than sit out in my camp chair and observe: "Warm today. Warm yesterday. Warm tomorrow, too."
