There are so many ecosystems that we have explored but we have never wandered through a natural palm grove. That is, until we hiked along the Thousand palms oasis preserve.
Thousand Palms Oasis sprouts from the desert of the Coachella Valley courtesy of the San Andreas fault. Springs along the fault feed intermittent swamps and ponds where palms as high as 60 feet and old as 150 years flourish.
We took the McCallum trail from the Thousand Palms Oasis to the McCallum Oasis. On the way, we wander through a desert wash, a riparian forest, and sand dunes. It is a delightfully diverse collection of ecosystems for a two mile hike.
