We scheduled two full days in Te Anau so that we could pick the best of the days to visit Milford Sound. After an incredibly active day, today, the constant rain and lack of indoor attractions have us spending most of the day, relaxing and recharging inside. We are nearly halfway through our road trip and I am grateful for the break.

We do take a moment to explore the outdoor bird menagerie when there is a brief break in the weather. The light drizzle means that many of the birds were taking cover. The Kākā, a rather drab forest parrot did not have the decency to spread its wings so that we could see the brilliant color underneath. We also didn’t get a gander at the Takahē, a large, flightless bird endemic to New Zealand. We did see a lot of ducks.
Otherwise, we call it a day early, and enjoy the continuing saga of The Lord of the Rings.
