Empty Nesters
I am looking for someone, something to blame.⠀
I am devastated,⠀
I am hurt,⠀
And I want to lash out.⠀
I woke up this morning to a cry: “the chicks are hatching!” Even in my semi-conscious state, that sounded wrong. This is far too early for hatching robin chicks. But why say it if it wasn’t true?⠀
I grabbed my camera to take a picture but didn’t have the heart. It would be a desecration of the poor little baby chicks that never were. One egg was missing and the other three had been broken open.⠀
After all that excitement, we would not get to see the chicks hatch and leave the nest.⠀
I’m not exactly sure what ate the eggs. There are many predators that would love the little mouthfuls. Yet, while walking through the yard, we came across this king snake. Part of me wanted to punish it. Even if it hadn’t eaten these eggs, it would if it could. Even if it had eaten these eggs, it was only doing what it knew. That is part of survival.⠀
So we move on.⠀
The mother robin never returned to her nest.
