It’s hard to believe that just a few days ago we were sweating it out in Death Valley. Now, we are perched above June Lake, with a view that takes reservations to procure, and a smug sense of satisfaction. The only downside with the picturesque Oh! Ridge Campground, though, is the wind. It sweeps over the lake and hits us with a ferocity that I thought was reserved for a response to the dozens. I haven’t said anything mean about June Lake’s mama, but the wind is certainly fierce.

The downside is that the wind will snuff out any attempt at a campfire I may make. While my fire making skills have advanced, the people selling wood even told me that, without some kind of shelter from the wind, a fire wasn’t happening. So, no episode of Campfire Cooking With Roamlab today. Windy as it may be, we still have a comfy truck bed shell with huge windows to enjoy the view.

As the pictures may have given away, though, the wind did die down as evening approached. Too late to stock for a proper meal, we pulled out our reserve of freeze dried meals and boiled some water over the fire. I must admit, while nowhere near as good as a freshly cooked chicken leg, Mountain House’s Beef Stroganoff is impressively palatable. We just so happened to have a bottle of cabernet and a marvelous sunset to pair with it. Who needs the chef’s tasting menu when you have views like these?
