With our travels relaunched, we thought it was time to make Dodgy a bit more homey. Thus, we visited that center of all things domestic, IKEA. After extended debate over the best balance of frugality and comfort, we settled on…
Baltimore did not get it’s due. After a relatively sleepless night, I had exhausted my energy but had acquired a migraine. It was a beautiful day along the bay but our tour of a WWII submarine left me ill from the stale air. A better experience was found on the Constellation, the last military ship powered by sails owned by the US, which patrolled the Mediterranean during the Civil War to prevent the confederates from gaining resources in Europe. It was a beautiful ship and included an entertaining audio tour.
DC was delightful. While we did stop by the requisite Lincoln, Jefferson, and Vietnam memorials, we spent most of our time in two places: the American History Museum, and the Natural History Museum. We saw diamonds, Kermit the Frog, and Dorothy’s slippers. The greatest surprise was when we stumbled onto a small display in the shipping section of the American History Museum which included a small speck of gold under a magnifying glass. Yet this little speck is attributed as the first nugget discovered by John Marshal at Sutter’s Mill, sparking the California Gold Rush.
I suppose that heading to the nation's capitol would inherently involve some traffic. We just weren't expecting this.
Explore Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown, and more of the colorfully costumed colonial coast of Virginia.
Today is a landmark in our travels. It is the day in which we finally spanned the coasts of America. If Virginia is for lovers then it was meant for us.
It seems that we never truly leave school. For all the diplomas collected and a deep disinterest in teaching, still, I find myself in school. Well, at least, I'm staying in an Inn that was converted from a school house.
Call it serendipity. Call it fate. We call it lunch. Today, while driving through Kentucky, we saw signs for the home of the original Kentucky Fried Chicken and its accompanying museum. Food and a museum in one place? Excellent!
Dodgy's journeys have not been the easiest, and with each mechanical trial arises a new quest: to find a mechanic that will actually fix Dodgy's problems. For most people, a matter of a broken brake light or air conditioning unit is simply remedied by a trip to the nearest mechanic, yet Dodgy has already visited three mechanics. After the second explained that our business was not worth the time and effort it would take to find replacement parts, he referred us to a shop specializing in car electrical work. Despite both the mechanic calling ahead and us scheduling an appointment to drop off the car, we found ourselves cajoling Mechanic #3 to take on the project.
