Vineyard 29

An upside of travel is the many beautiful places we can visit. Few compare to the cultivated grandeur of Napa Valley. Of course, the reason we were there was no so much to look at the sprawling vineyards and grand tasting rooms but to actually taste the valley's celebrated export: wine. We came with one exceptional winery in mind: Vineyard 29. The consistently 90+ rated wines from this winery are the product not only of prime location but highly advanced technology used in sorting grapes and every other step in the fermentation and bottling process.

Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve

Mark Twain described Mono Lake as "lifeless, treeless, hideous desert... the loneliest place on earth" in his work Roughing It. And while adjectives like "desolate," "harsh," or "bleak" may be appropriate, "hideous" would not. Lake Mono is an expanse of lacy limestone sculpture flanked by majestic mountain ranges. This shallow saline soda lake is a thing of beauty.

Grand Canyon National Park – South Rim

The South Rim of the Grand Canyon is one of the most popular sections of this iconic landmark and our drive along Highway 64 and it's many vistas makes it pretty clear why.

Seventy-miles north of Flagstaff, Arizona is one of the most iconic National Parks in the United States: the Grand Canyon. A drive along Highway 64 will travel between many iconic stops along the Grand Canyon's South Rim. Even as a day trip from Flagstaff, it is absolutely worth the trip.

Broken Arrow Trail

There is a reason for the hikes popularity. It's a relatively easy hike, good for all ages, and the views are AMAZING. Each elevation gain calls for another pause to take in the panoramic view. While the route is a 3.2 mile loop with moderate elevation gain, any distance along the trail is worth the view!

Brins Mesa Trail

Sedona has so many trails in and among the brilliantly colored buttes that the choice of what to hike can be daunting. There are the classics—like Broken Arrow and Devil's Bridge—but the popularity of these shouldn't negate the many other trails. In fact, popularity and small parking lots can be a compelling reason to focus on alternate trails, especially later in the day.

National Route 66 Museum Complex

The National Route 66 Museum in Elk City, Oklahoma is one of many museums commemorating this historic road. It stands out in the quality of many of the displays but also the scope of it's displays. Not only does the museum cover classic cars, tourist traps, and drive-in culture but it has additional displays covering the cultural and industrial history of Oklahoma.

Route 66 is one of the few remaining and remembered byways from the early days of cross country motor travel. In a day before the interstate system and standardized routes—when motor clubs marked roads and popular thruways had their own name—Route 66 was the Mother Road.

Overland Expo East 2018

Fall colors at Overland Expo in North Carolina

Yes, we went to Overland Expo East. No, we didn't camp or stay the whole week like we did two years ago. For people in the middle of a build, those tickets get expensive and the time is better spent plugging up leaks. Yet, for one day, we waded through shoe-engulfing mud, the likes of which I hadn't seen off the set of Deadwood to talk with fellow wanderers and vendors to inspire the next stages of our build.
