Monument Valley, Mexican Hat, Goosenecks State Park, and Forest Gump Point

Scenic Highway 163 is an awe-inspiring route, threading through southern Utah’s gems, including Monument Valley, Mexican Hat, Goosenecks State Park, and Forest Gump Point.  Explore remote and colorful Utah vistas and continue to Lake Powell to the west or Shiprock to the east.

Nonstop Vistas

US-163 is your quintessential scenic back highway.  This two-lane strip of asphalt snakes through some of the most scenic and yet remote spots in Utah.  While everyone else is crowding into Utah’s national parks, discover your own, private vistas.

Muley Point is a mecca for boondockers, overlanders, and outdoor adventurers, hovering over the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Southern Utah.

Four Corners and Beyond

Highway 163 is relatively short, but road trips along it can naturally be extended east into Colorado and New Mexico via US-162 or west to Lake Page, the Vermillion Cliffs, or Grand Canyon via US 160 and Highway 89 (one of my favorites).

The Navajo people of Shiprock, New Mexico do not permit general access to this iconic site so we take a respectful shot from the highway.
