Pfeiffer Big Sur Campground

Nestled among the Red Wood Trees and bordering the Big Sur River is the Pfeiffer Big Sur Campground. This highly desirable campground can book up six months in advance though flexible travelers looking for one night have reasonable odds of coming up lucky. Each campsite includes the standard fire ring and picnic table. Shared bathrooms include running water and showers. A mix of redwood and other trees provide visual privacy for each site.

Aguirre Spring Campground

Leaving Aguirre Spring Campground

We don't have high expectations when we compromise on a campground. We are headed to White Sands National Monument, but there are no drive-in camp sites in the monument itself. So, we need a campground not too far outside of the monument to spend the night and are willing to sacrifice scenery for proximity. So, we expect the regular cramped campgrounds. We are not prepared for the remarkable views from Aguirre Spring Campground.

Returning from the King of Arizona Mine. See the sign on to the left of Dodgy? That marks the beginning of private property and our strange chase scene.

Kofa National Wildlife Refuge sits between Quartzsite and Yuma, Arizona. From certain parts of the refuge, you can hear the explosion of ordinance from the neighboring military proving ground. This time, however, we intent to explore the heart of this 665,400 acres of Yuma desert and the refuge's namesake.

Culp Valley Primitive Campground

We arrive at this the Culp Valley Primitive Campground late at night. The sun set hours ago and the only light comes from a few dispersed campers already in position and a faint glow from the city's light pollution across the mountains. As with many primitive camping sites, there isn't a lot of signage to indicate where to go. After a bit of fumbling about, though, we managed to back into a little nook and settle in for the night.
